Could information be a state of matter?

I was thinking one of these days that with all the later efforts in informatics on acquiring, analyzing, processing and transforming data, “information” has started to become, in a way, a state of matter. It’s kind of hard to name it actually matter – as it’s far from that – you can not feel or touch or see it with what is known as sensors, but going beyond that, we still can say that:

  • It is seen through a presentation layer
  • It can be transformed into other states (different ways to store it, different ways to change it)
  • It can be contained
  • It can be quantified

Yet one can loose information – thus it can not be said that it conserves itself – but thinking at a larger scale I tend to say that the total information that exists is the same as its source is from the things around us. (Anyway I agree with the motto: “The information on this planet is constant in time among the population, but the population keeps increasing.”)

I’m still debating with myself it we can call information an actual state of matter, definitely not in the normal terms, but I think that in larger terms it’s true. Any good pro/con arguments are welcome.

Until then the classic view of matter:

“A code system is always the result of a mental process (it requires an intelligent origin or inventor) … It should be emphasized that matter as such is unable to generate any code. All experiences indicate that a thinking being voluntarily exercising his own free will, cognition, and creativity, is required.

There is no known natural law through which matter can give rise to information, neither is any physical process or material phenomenon known that can do this”

(am revenit cu clarificari deoarece crede ca intrebarea are o greutate foarte mare, si de raspunsul care se da acestei intrebari depinde felul in care privim si intelegem intreaga lume)
